Past projects
2005 - 2006
University of Sheffield, Department of Information Studies
2004 - 2005
Welch Medical Library, Johns Hopkins University
- Conversion of the PLoS Medicine journal to a PDA format
As a volunteer for HandheldsForDoctors.com, I am responsible for preparing the handheld version of PLoS Medicine.
- PDA services for medical libraries
I have completed a study of PDA services for medical libraries in North America. A conceptual framework for medical library PDA services was developed and used for preparing service recommendations at the Welch Medical Library.
- Welch Library PDA Task Force
I initiated a library-wide task force to study PDA services development. As chair, I led the team in studying the PDA needs and service priorities at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. This study was based on my earlier PDA service recommendations. I have prepared a detailed report (with appendix).
- Welch Library PDA Committee
I formed a committee to strengthen and develop PDA services at the Welch Library. As chair, I helped to define committee goals and outcomes.
- Welch Library home page for PDAs
I worked on the development of a PDA-compatible library website. For handheld users, this site will outline library services and provide useful resources.
- Conversion of documents to a PDA format
I have prepared a proposal for converting local hospital practice guidelines for PDA display.
- Chemoinformatics
I studied chemoinformatics looking at library services for this field.
I wrote a paper to introduce chemoinformatics for a journal club discussion at Welch Library.
- Organized a lecture series on emerging information technologies
The topics included open source software, RSS, and blogs. The three lectures were recorded and archived for viewing on the web. Further details.
- Analysis of the information behavior and needs of basic medical science researchers
I volunteered as a research assistant in the PELICAN lab at Johns Hopkins Medicine. This pathology lab studies lethal metatstatic prostate cancer and uses a specially developed web-based software to manage workflow and data collection in all stages of the research process. This experience helped me to understand the user needs of translational medicine researchers.
2003 - 2004
US National Library of Medicine
- PubMed help manual online book
Published NLM's PubMed help manual as an online book in the NCBI Bookshelf format.
I edited the manual, authored new sections, converted the manual to XML, and oversaw its initial publication.
- Linking NLM's Household Products Database to PubMed
I designed a computer algorithm for generating hyperlinks in chemical records that will retrieve medical literature citations (i.e., connecting records in the Household Products Database (HPD) and PubMed).
I also wrote a Java program to automate the XML file generation for PubMed LinkOut to HPD.
